Getting your apps ready...
The Internet is broken – and we are using it to access and distribute all of human knowledge. Data monopolies hold and enclose upon personal & public datasets, threatening universal access. To tackle this problem, between 2013 and 2015 we performed a series of design & development sprints in collaboration with researchers, librarians, and civic technologists working to preserve the digital knowledge commons. Out of this research we built Dat, a distributed ledger & peer-to-peer data sharing toolkit.

The Dat Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the Dat Protocol (now evolved into Hypercore Protocol), enabling peer-to-peer, secure, and versioned data sharing for developers and communities building decentralized applications.
The Dat Foundation, fiscally sponsored by Code for Science & Society, provides grants, social infrastructure, and technical support for projects building on the Dat Protocol. Launched in 2013, it addresses data monopolies by corporations that enclose public and personal datasets, threatening access to knowledge. The protocol combines peer-to-peer scaling from BitTorrent with Git-like version history, allowing mutable data with full audit trails.
It was built for scientists, librarians, civic technologists, and developers aiming to preserve the digital knowledge commons and create a next-generation decentralized web. The foundation has raised about $1.7 million from grants by Knight Foundation, Sloan Foundation, Moore Foundation, Mozilla, and others to foster open development.
Though the foundation's website is deprecated (new ecosystem at dat-ecosystem.org under Apereo Foundation as of 2025), the protocol lives on as Hypercore Protocol, powering apps like Beaker Browser and Mapeo.
