Samvera is a vibrant, community-driven open-source project providing flexible digital repository software for libraries, archives, museums, and institutions managing digital collections and scholarly materials.
Samvera, formerly known as Hydra, is a collaborative open-source community that develops sustainable repository software tools based on a shared infrastructure. Launched in 2008 by institutions including Stanford University, University of Virginia, University of Hull, and Fedora Commons, it rebranded to Samvera in 2017 to emphasize togetherness and community collaboration.
The project solves the challenge of building customizable digital repositories without duplicating effort across institutions. It provides a common 'body' (Fedora for content storage, Solr for metadata indexing) and pluggable 'heads' (Ruby on Rails applications for user interfaces and workflows), enabling both highly tailored solutions and quick turn-key implementations.
It's built for information professionals, technologists, libraries, universities, and consortia who need to ingest, preserve, discover, and share diverse digital assets like research papers, images, audio, and cultural heritage materials.
The community was formed to pool expertise, share development costs, foster interoperability, and accelerate innovation in digital preservation through open-source collaboration.
