ejabberd XMPP Server with MQTT Broker & SIP Service
ejabberd is an XMPP server (Jabber server), MQTT broker and SIP gateway built to create awesome realtime services like massive chat, instant communication, IoT and more.
Categories:
ejabberd is a robust, scalable open-source realtime messaging platform supporting XMPP server, MQTT broker, and SIP service, designed for developers and teams building high-performance communication, IoT, and VoIP applications.
π Overview
ejabberd is an open-source, Erlang/OTP-based realtime platform that provides a rock-solid XMPP server, MQTT broker, and SIP service. It's renowned for its massive scalability, fault tolerance, and extensibility, capable of handling millions of concurrent users.
What problem does this project solve? It addresses the challenges of building reliable, high-scale realtime communication systems that support multiple protocols without downtime or data loss, especially for mobile messaging, gaming, and IoT.
Who is it built for? Developers, sysadmins, and teams deploying production-grade servers for chat apps, IoT platforms, and VoIP services.
Why did you build it? Developed by Process-One over 16+ years to deliver a professional, standards-compliant implementation of open realtime protocols like XMPP, MQTT, and SIP.
β¨ Key Features
- Multi-protocol support for XMPP, MQTT, and SIP (powers chat, IoT pub/sub, and VoIP in one server)
- Massive scalability: 2M+ concurrent users on a single node, efficient clustering with consistent hashing
- Fault-tolerant: Hot-upgradable, no message loss, handles mobile disconnections
- Highly extensible: Powerful APIs (REST, ejabberdctl), modular hooks for custom plugins
- Manageable and secure: Command-line tools, SSL/TLS, interoperable with clients and federates
Optional: Built-in PubSub, WebSocket support, mobile libraries integration
π Tech Stack
- Backend: Erlang/OTP
- Database: Mnesia (default Erlang DB), PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Redis, Riak
- Auth: Modular authentication (internal, external LDAP, JWT, etc.)
- Hosting: Self-hosted, Docker containers, OS packages (Debian/Ubuntu), Homebrew
