Selenium automates browsers. That's it!
Categories:
Selenium is an open-source browser automation framework and ecosystem used primarily for testing web applications across multiple programming languages and browsers.
Selenium is an umbrella project providing a suite of tools and libraries for automating web browsers. It includes Selenium WebDriver for programmatic control of browsers, Selenium IDE for record-and-playback testing, and Selenium Grid for distributed test execution. Originally created in 2004 by Jason Huggins at ThoughtWorks as a JavaScriptTestRunner to automate testing of an internal time and expense web application, it evolved into a robust framework after being open-sourced.
The project solves the problem of manual browser testing being time-consuming, error-prone, and unscalable, especially for regression testing across diverse browsers and operating systems. It enables creating reliable automation scripts that mimic user interactions, scale tests across environments, and support continuous integration.
It is built for QA engineers, developers, and testing teams working on web applications. The community-driven project was developed to provide a standardized, W3C-compliant way to automate browsers, freeing testers from repetitive tasks and improving software quality.
