F-Droid is a free and open source app store and repository for Android, distributing only FOSS apps built from source code, as an ethical alternative to Google Play Store.
F-Droid is an installable catalogue of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) apps for Android and a distribution ecosystem prioritizing user freedom and privacy. It provides a client app and website where users can browse, install, and update apps without accounts, tracking, or proprietary software.
This project solves the issues of mainstream app stores like ads, user tracking, non-free dependencies, and lack of transparency by requiring apps to be fully FOSS, reproducibly built from public source code, and flagging any 'anti-features'. It's built for Android users who value privacy, security, and software freedom—such as de-Googlers, FOSS enthusiasts, and those in censored regions needing offline/local sharing.
Started in 2010 by Ciaran Gultnieks to combat 'lock-down, lock-in, and nefarious behavior from software on phones', it's now maintained by a global volunteer community emphasizing reproducible builds, Debian-based building, and minimal trust requirements. Despite challenges like Android sideloading restrictions, it remains vital with over 3,800 apps.
